Check up and cleaning
Why check-ups & cleanings matter in proactive dentistry
Catch problems early: Tiny cavities, hairline cracks, failing fillings, and gum changes are found when they’re easiest (and least costly) to treat.
Control biofilm & inflammation: Professional cleaning disrupts plaque in deep/hidden areas your brush can’t reach, protecting gums and bone.
Protect teeth from fracture: We monitor large restorations, bite forces, and wear so we can reinforce or adjust before a tooth breaks.
Reduce root canal/extraction risk: Identifying cracks, recurrent decay, and high-risk patterns prevents emergencies.
Screen for oral cancer: Routine head-and-neck and soft-tissue checks improve the chance of early detection.
Personalize prevention: We assess caries risk (diet, saliva, medications), then tailor fluoride/5000 ppm options, xylitol, sealants, and recall interval.
Support bite & airway health: We evaluate occlusion, bruxism, and airway signs; simple interventions (e.g., nightguards) can prevent further damage.
Save time and money: Preventive visits keep treatment simple, predictable, and minimally invasive.
Dental Exam
A comprehensive dental exam will be performed at your initial visit. At regular check-ups, your dentist and hygienist will include the following:
Data Collection & Imaging
Diagnostic X-rays (Radiographs)
Oral Cancer Screening
Gum Disease (Periodontal) Evaluation
Tooth Decay Examination
Existing Restorations Review
Cracks & Wear Assessment
Professional Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
